Upskilling

A few years ago, I asked Mum to teach me to crochet. We spent a day creating a little owl. I was going to take a very cute photo of the owl, but The Scot got interested…

Fast forward to now. I took the beginner’s crochet class at KAN and hatched a plan to crochet a rainbow blanket. Only, I didn’t yet know how to crochet even a granny square. I did, however, have to make a quick trip home to see an irascible grandfather in hospital, and while Mum and I sat in his room, she took me through the simple granny square.

And I may now be slightly addicted to crochet.

A Granny Square!

A Granny Square!

I’ve always loved the concept of the granny square – embracing my inner granny and all.

A friend noted that I seem to have coordinated my crochet with my fruit tingles. Oh yes! It’s a great way to use those crazy skeins of sock yarn. I plan to use a few coordinating skeins and crochet around each square in white. It should look pretty as a blanket.

I’ve also been working on the Doctor Who sampler.

Appearing TARDIS

Appearing TARDIS

I’ve started on the TARDIS! I’m just figuring out if I can tweak the design slightly to include something from 12. Something about pudding brains… and a little Mary Poppins, because we always knew the truth about her.

All kinds of balls

I might just have watched the latest Doctor Who episode, “Listen,” for the third time this week. That’s totally not over the top, right? (By the way, I’ve begun to suspect that it’s a Sontaran sitting on Rupert’s bed.)

I may have become a 12th Doctor kind of woman, possibly from the moment his attack eyebrows appeared in “The Day of the Doctor.” It was definitely confirmed with ‘Door. Boring. Not me’ (“Deep Breath”). And as someone who got into¬†Doctor Who at “Invasion of the Dinosaurs” with the 3rd Doctor, the Doctor standing in a nightshirt, on a rooftop in Victorian London, yelling ‘Oy! Oy! Big, sexy woman!’ to a dinosaur… yeah, well, I’m sold.

Before I left for New Zealand a few days after “Deep Breath,” I’d already changed my desktop…

Speaking of that, I did get Pop Rocks in New Zealand! Along with some Robin’s Egg Blue and Smokestack. I might have been swayed by the amazing woman behind Holland Road Yarn Company who suggested the colour combination on Twitter. When I was in the Wellington shop, they followed me home.

Balls

Balls

Oh wow that Madeleine Tosh DK is squishy! I now understand why everyone talks about it in hushed tones. And why certain people I know pet it.

I’m seeing if I can make a Happy Street Shawl work in DK. So far, so good.

Right at the moment, the Scot is playing with one of his own balls. It’s a plastic ball that makes a lot of noise as it bounces off walls and furniture and occasionally the power switch for the computer…

But he’s crazy about balls. I love this photo of him that I took while we were playing soccer in the back yard. It may seem weird, because I basically cut most of him off as I tried to juggle the camera… but look at that smile!

Incidentally, while watching this season of Doctor Who, the sampler grows.

Oh, who really needs a diamond cliff face to scrawl a message to the Doctor? I have a needle and some blue thread.

Shelley gave me the pattern (from Crown Street Cottage on Etsy) and since the new Doctor Who episode is a mere fortnight away, I thought I should start work. It’s going to be brilliant!

Mum and I found some fantastic cross stitch magazines in Milan. Don’t understand Italian? No hassle. Everything is charted, after all, and we’ve managed to sort out supplies with a little help from google translate. I do have plans to eventually stitch a table cloth.

I’m back now. I have jetlag + ‘flu, which isn’t a fantastic combination. However, I did manage to finish a little project.

The Scot and I think #Scotlock could be a thing! I finished up the last shoe of my little Sherlock. I did have some fun with the work in progress…

But now it’s done and all that’s left is to stitch Watson, too, and make them into matching cushions (for pillow fights!).

I bought some special fabric for the cushions from Spoonflower. I also picked up some cute pencils, because I love using pencils and there’ll be much use for them soon between all the grading of papers and theses and the jotting down of designs. Guess which pencil I plan to use for what!
